In a continued effort to combat tuberculosis (TB) at the community level, a Capacity-Building Workshop on Contact Investigation (CI) and TB Preventive Treatment (TPT) was successfully held from July 1 to 4, 2025, for the first batch of medical doctors from Region 8.
Spearheaded through the collaborative efforts of Culion Foundation Inc. (CFI) and the National Tuberculosis Program (NTP) Coordinators of the Department of Health โ€“ Center for Health Development (DOH-CHD) Region 8, the four-day workshop aimed to equip healthcare providers with enhanced knowledge and practical skills in TB prevention.
Participants engaged in in-depth sessions on TB Infection (TBI), contact investigation, TBI testing, and TB Preventive Treatment. The sessions were facilitated by the CFI Training Team – Dr. Maria Julieta C. Recidoro, the Senior Health Program Manager, Ms. Elly Rose S. Amurao, TB Program Manager, Ms. Marie Joy M. Sebastian, TB Technical Coordinator, and invited speakers. Among the key speakers was Dr. Mary Rosary Santiago of the Philippine Tuberculosis Society, Inc. (PTSI), who led a comprehensive discussion on TPT implementation, including clarifications on frequently asked questions.
Key components of the training included:
โ€ข Updates on national guidelines and protocols for CI and TPT
โ€ข Hands-on training in the administration and interpretation of the Tuberculin Skin Test (TST)
โ€ข Development of clinical leadership and technical capacity to detect, prevent, and interrupt TB transmission
The workshop marks a critical step in scaling up local TB control efforts and ensuring improved health outcomes across the region.
