In October 2022, the Culion Foundation, in partnership with the Philippine Business for Social Progress (PBSP) and the Department of Health (DOH), launched a significant TB-Active case finding initiative in the islands of Palawan. This endeavor aimed to screen vulnerable groups, including the elderly, people living with HIV (PLHIV), other immunocompromised individuals, smokers, and those exhibiting TB-related symptoms. The project was of particular significance as Palawan holds a special place in the history of the Culion Foundation, known for its mission to combat leprosy, now expanding its efforts to help eradicate tuberculosis.

Palawan holds a unique place in the Culion Foundation's history, as it is where the foundation's name was derived from the island of Culion, once home to a leprosarium. The foundation's historic dedication to combating leprosy has now expanded to address tuberculosis, another pressing health concern affecting communities in the region.

Recognizing the higher risks faced by vulnerable populations, the Culion Foundation and its partners directed their efforts towards these groups. By focusing on the elderly, PLHIV, immunocompromised individuals, smokers, and symptomatic individuals, the initiative sought to detect and treat TB cases early, thus curbing the spread of the disease.

During the TB-Active case finding initiative in Palawan, a total of 1500 individuals from vulnerable groups were successfully screened. Early detection of TB cases allowed for timely treatment, helping prevent further transmission and improve the health outcomes of those affected. The initiative's impact extended beyond the number of individuals screened, as it reinforced the Culion Foundation's commitment to advancing public health. By expanding its mission to address tuberculosis, the foundation demonstrated its adaptive approach in tackling emerging health challenges.
