The Culion Foundation, Inc. commemorated the life and legacy of Fr. Javier Olazabal at the Norfil Foundation Building on March 25, 2026, through a hybrid event participated in by all members of CFI.
More than a chaplain in Culion, once the worldโs largest leprosy colony, Father Ola was a steadfast advocate for persons affected by leprosy (PALs) and a driving force behind the founding of the Culion Foundation, Inc., together with Don Jose Soriano Sr. and Don Luis Gamarra , to provide humane care and lasting support for the islandโs patients. He improved living conditions, built infrastructure, expanded access to education, and served as a compassionate counselor and friend to PALs. Through tireless advocacyโincluding thousands of letters seeking global aidโhe championed life-changing interventions such as multi-drug therapy, witnessing the first patients declared cured in 1987, cementing his legacy at the heart of CFIโs mission.
The program featured welcome remarks by Executive Director Eugenio M. Caccam, Jr., who highlighted the significance of celebrating Father Olaโs life and his lasting impact on the organization and communities. Rev. Fr. Neupito J. Saicon, S.J., Loyola College of Culion President, expressed gratitude to CFI for honoring Father Olaโs legacy, followed by a message of support from Mr. Maxim F. Raymundo of the local government.
The event also recognized the awardees of the Fr. Javier Olazabal Academic Excellence Award and featured the presentation of upcoming activities.
