The Balisungan Women-Managed Area (MPA-WMA) proudly brought home the Best Mangrove Award at the Para El Mar 2025 Awards held on September 17–18 in Iloilo City.
This milestone is made possible through the strong partnership between the Culion Foundation, Inc. (CFI), Shalom Women’s Biodiversity Conservation Association, Inc., Coron LGU, and Barangay Tagumpay-BLGU. Together, they have nurtured mangroves, strengthened community stewardship, and shown how collaboration can safeguard both people and nature.
Represented by Imelda Mazo, President of the Shalom Women’s Biodiversity Conservation Association, the Balisungan team shared their inspiring journey on how women have become true guardians of the coast. From planting and protecting mangroves to raising community awareness, they continue to lead with resilience and hope.
Their leadership is further strengthened by the amended Municipal Ordinance No. 51, series of 2023, which officially places the Balisungan MPA under the stewardship of women leaders.
This award is more than just recognition of persistence; it is a celebration of community power and proof of what can be achieved when organizations and people work hand-in-hand for the environment.
