Reaching the Unreachable: TB Active Case Finding in GIDA Communities of Jovellar, Albay, Bicol

In the fight against tuberculosis (TB), every life counts, no matter how remote the location. Through Active Case Finding (ACF), Culion Foundation, Inc. (CFI) in partnership with the Philippine Business for Social Progress (PBSP) go beyond health centers and into the heart of communities, especially in Geographically Isolated and Disadvantaged Areas (GIDA) where access to healthcare is limited, and the risk of undiagnosed TB is high.
Whether it’s crossing rivers, hiking mountains, or riding for hours to reach far-flung barangays, our health workers and volunteers are on the move—bringing TB screening, education, and care directly to the people who need it most.
During ACF activities, community members are:
1. Educated on TB symptoms and prevention
2. Screened using symptom-based questionnaires or chest X-rays
3. Referred for testing (sputum collection or GeneXpert) if needed
4. Provided with immediate support and linkage to treatment if diagnosed
TB does not discriminate, and neither should healthcare. The goal is simple but powerful: Find TB. Treat TB. Eliminate TB.
Together, we’re building a future where no one is left behind in the journey to end TB. Let’s continue to support outreach programs that bring life-saving services to the most remote areas.
